Learn how to get ahead in high school!

Check out these quick and easy tips to learn how you can get ahead in high school!

Adopt a planner system! As a high schooler, you are juggling commitments to your classes, family, friends, extracurriculars, and more which means you likely have a busy schedule.

You can use a traditional paperback planner, a notebook, or even an online app! Find what works best for you but make sure that you use something to help you keep track of all assignment due dates and exam deadlines.

Take classes that will challenge you… in subjects that you are want to learn more about! You will be able to expand your knowledge and put your skills to the test best by choosing challenging classes in high school. However, you need to be careful to do so for classes that you are genuinely interested in! Trying to slam as many AP courses in any given year will result in burn out. Make sure to spread it out.

Remember that it is key to strike the balance between challenging yourself in the traditional academic sense as well as engaging in classes that help you sharpen your hobby interests. If you love music or art, try to find a class that offers that material!

Study smart so you can earn top grades. Studying smart isn’t just about the number of hours you put into studying. While spending the appropriate amount of time is important, you also need to make sure that you are studying effectively while doing so. Three hours of studying smart is much better than five or six hours of half effort and distracted studying.

Form strong relationships with your high school teachers. Your teachers are knowledgeable individuals. Remember, they’ve been through this before! If you are looking for advice on how to do well in high school, reach out to our teachers. If you are struggling with a particular topic, ask for help. They can be your mentors and guides as you navigate high school waters. If you are thinking about one day applying to college, you will be able to rely on your teachers to write good recommendation letters.

Try to join extracurricular activities you enjoy! High schools are usually abuzz with clubs and organizations that are open for students to join. Find a club or organization that reaches out to your interests! Are there no clubs at your school that pique your particular interests? Reach out to a teacher or counselor and start talking about starting your own club today! Doing so will allow you to get involved with something you care about and show leadership initiative on your part.

Look into the PSAT and SAT or the ACT. As long as you are thinking about applying for college, and even if you aren’t sure, it would be wise to start learning about your college entrance exam options. Understanding the different kinds of tests ahead of time will help you in the short and long run.
