Do you want to get straight As? That’s an ambitious but not impossible goal!
Getting straight As requires a lot of effort. However, even though many people think it requires sleepless nights, seeping 10 cups of coffee, and cramming as many hours as possible, there’s actually another, much more useful and effective way to be a straight-A student.
Not only is that studying pattern extremely unhealthy, but it will also do the opposite of enabling you to get straight As. Burn out won’t help you succeed! It’s been proven that burning out may help you get some top grades, but, in the long run, you will have a hard time remembering what you’ve studied.
Then, what do some students do to get straight As? The secret is not to study longer or harder, just smarter!
What does that mean? The answer is that the goals you achieve are not a result of how much time you spend doing something, but of the quality of your hard work. Of course studying hard will do its part, but studying hard isn’t the only thing you have to do.
The following are some things that are much more effective, simpler, healthier than burning out to achieve your goals.
8 Tips to Get Straight-As
1. Avoid Cramming. Instead Do Periodic Review
It is highly inadvisable to cram, as it doesn’t guarantee that you will pass an exam, and it is very likely that you will have forgotten what you’ve studied within a week.
Periodic review is much more effective than cramming! Reviewing the course materials and your notes from class regularly will make it easier for the content to stick with you and you will actually understand the material.
2. Stay on Top of Important Dates
Having a clear plan will make it easier to be on top of important dates and deadlines. Using a calendar, whether a digital or physical calendar, whatever works for you, will help you keep track of the deadlines, and will also come in handy to schedule your weeks to study!
3. Find Help When Necessary
Studying with others is extremely beneficial and increases the chances of getting top grades. Studying or doing homework with a group helps students stay focused, as they will push you to avoid giving up if you get discouraged.
You are not alone. There are many other people in the same boat as you. You can help each other study, understand difficult concepts, and stay motivated!
4. Develop Time Management Skills
Time management is an essential skill, not only to study, but for everything we do! Effectivity is tantamount to being able to manage your time, as it will enable you to lead a less stressful and more balanced life.
Taking 10 minutes a day to set your goals for the day and scheduling a certain amount of time for each specific task you need to get done will enable you to be much more organized and productive.
5. Get Rid of Distractions
Do away with distractions! Dedicate specific blocks of time, away from work and personal commitments such as friends or family, in order to focus on studying and completing schoolwork. We highly recommend that you turn your phone off, or at least your notifications, as it is proven to be the number one distraction.
6. Find a Quiet Place to Study
In order to get straight As, being organized and focused is key. But this is impossible if our study space is distracting.
Finding a quiet space and time is a must, because you will feel relaxed, as it will make it easier for you to focus. You should have peace and minimal noise and distractions. It is a good idea to set apart a specific corner of your home that’s as quiet and free from distractions as possible.
7. Organization is Key
Being organized is essential when it comes to studying smart. This is related to one of our previous tips, as keeping track of deadlines goes a long way in being organized. Nevertheless, we’d like to add keeping your subjects organized as another essential.
Having a separate notepad for each subject is a must to avoid confusion. Many students use a single notepad divided by subjects but this way it can be easier to mix things up!
8. Take Care of Yourself
Last but not least, let’s talk about health. Our health should always be our #1 priority. Being healthy, both physically and mentally, fosters productivity and improves our memory! On the other hand, when we don’t take care of our health because we have so much to do, we are less productive, our studying sessions are less effective, and we are more likely to burn out.
Getting enough sleep, eating well, taking a walk once in a while, and taking breaks are all essential, not only to stay healthy, but also to increase our productivity.
With these tips, you will be able to get straight As! And, these tips can help you study smart even if getting straight As isn’t your goal.
