Procrastination is really common, but when we find ourselves deep under a pile of upcoming deadlines, it is important that we learn the lesson and start doing something to prevent us from ending up the same way. Keep reading to find some tips that will help you avoid procrastination.
Let’s admit it: All of us have put off tasks when we aren’t in the mood to get down to it. However, procrastination is not just postponing tasks.
Procrastination is the act of postponing tasks until the last minute, or even past their deadlines, which means we have to do everything in a rush, whether it is studying, working or any other activity that is our responsibility.
We all experience this once in a while. Procrastination simply reflects our human preference to satisfy immediate needs, put off a responsibility, and worry about it later on. This has immediate benefits but it leads to negative consequences in the short or long run.
We may feel relieved from dodging an unpleasant feeling or a boring task, as watching our favourite series, scrolling through social media, or meeting with our friends is much more interesting than studying or completing assignments. However, putting off our responsibilities too many times will be counterproductive, as the main consequence of procrastination is that our responsibilities may pile up and we may fail to comply with them.
It is not unusual to resort to procrastination sometimes. We are allowed to postpone what we don’t feel like doing once in a while, but when it brings about negative consequences, such as causing us to feel regretful or failing to meet deadlines, we need to start doing something about it.
5 Tips to Help You Avoid Procrastination
1. Chunk your tasks
Postponing writing an essay, studying for a final exam, writing a research paper, and any other activity that takes a long time to complete is very easy. But breaking your assignments into smaller chunks will help you get down to work! You can write the introductory paragraph one day, which will set you off to start writing. You can also write an outline or brainstorm to jot down ideas.
2. Establish your own deadlines
Many deadlines are too far away, and when we think we have plenty of time to do something, we are more likely to push it off. For that reason, it is advisable to set your own due dates, at least for small chunks of assignments at a time (just like we discussed above).
3. Reward yourself
Once you meet the deadlines you established, treat yourself with something you find rewarding! Whether eating something you love, watching a series, or anything else you enjoy, make sure you value your own effort. This is essential because, unluckily, most of the work we do in college is not immediately valuable. This way you will feel like all the hard work was worth it!
4. Get rid of all possible distractions
Turning off your phone, and even your wifi if you don’t study online, is very advisable. Social media and notifications have been proven the most common distractions. But if your phone is off, you will avoid getting distracted every time someone texts you or your favourite influencer posts!
5. Change the place where you study
Most of the places we tend to study, such as our bedrooms, living rooms, or any other room in our house, are full of distractions. It is advisable to change the study place once in a while in order to study or work with a fresher mind. You can go to a coffee shop, a library, a park or anywhere else that you find easy to concentrate on your studies.
